The Kindle has approximately 180 MB of storage available to users (according to the instruction booklet), which holds about 200 books. However, if you store music on the internal memory, it takes up space where books can go. A single mp3 file is approximately 4 or 5 MB, so if you're putting more than one CD on your Kindle, you're probably going to want an SD card.

I only put one CD on the Kindle so far, because I have a hard time reading while listening to music anyway. Luckily SD cards aren't all that expensive. You can get a 2 GB one (which incidentally holds the same amount of music as my mp3 player) for just about $10. The upside to having the SD card is that you can also store books on it in case you run out of room on the Kindle.

How much music does it hold? Did you feel a need to get an SD card? I've had my Kindle since January but haven't even touched on the music aspect of it.
